ALL-NEW FORD F-150 AND MUSTANG MACH-E EARN NORTH AMERICAN TRUCK AND UTILITY OF THE YEAR HONORS

  • All-new, all-electric Mustang Mach-E and all-new Ford F-150 are named 2021 North American Utility and Truck of the Year by a 50-member independent jury of print and broadcast journalists from the U.S. and Canada
  • The winning vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar
  • Both models have connected vehicle technology, including over-the-air updates, that keeps them in the forefront of purposeful technology and ensures customers’ future wants and needs are met through the life of the vehicle

Ford starts 2021 with not one, but two coveted accolades as the all-new, all-electric Mustang Mach-E and the all-new Ford F-150 claim the 2021 North American Utility and Truck of the Year.

“This recognition for Mustang Mach-E and F-150 is validation not only for our brand, but also for our Ford team, which continues to innovate and deliver on its commitment to creating must-have products and services,” said Kumar Galhotra, president, Ford Americas and IMG. “The North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year awards are among the most prestigious in the industry and such an honor serves as a capstone achievement for years of hard work for the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 teams.”

It is the first time since 2014 that the same brand has won multiple North American vehicle of the year awards in the same year.

Ford brought the all-new, all-electric Mustang Mach-E to life through a development process concentrated entirely on customer needs and desires, resulting in a sleek, beautiful SUV that delivers spirited ride and handling – with state-of-the-art connected vehicle technology that makes it even better over time.

This is the third in a series of recent awards that saw a Mustang Mach-E and F-150 double feature – both earned accolades in December for the Edmunds Top Rated Luxury EV and Edmunds Top Rated Truck of 2021, on top of recognition as the Green Car Journal 2021 Green Car of the Year and Green Truck of the Year.

Mustang Mach-E also was named Best Car to Buy 2021 by The Car Connection and Green Car Reports earlier this month.

The all-new F-150 is purpose-built to be the toughest, most productive F-150 ever, targeting the most towing and payload of any light-duty full-size pickup and introducing all-new features to increase customer productivity. F-150 has new connected vehicle innovations such as over-the-air updates that help keep it at the forefront of purposeful technology as well as an available all-new 3.5-liter PowerBoost hybrid powertrain with Pro Power Onboard – an integrated power generator.

The North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year awards are intended to recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar.

The organization gives out three awards: “North American Car of the Year,” “North American Utility Vehicle of the Year ,” and “North American Truck of the Year.” The awards are given by an independent jury of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada instead of by a single publication, website, radio or television station.

The accolades keep coming

The North American Utility and Truck of the Year awards are just two of many accolades Mustang Mach-E and F-150 have earned in recent months:

“Our team spent months living with and observing truck customers at their homes, on job sites and on the weekends,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford chief product platform and operations officer. “Using electrification, we realized we could now give customers something they had long wanted but didn’t think was possible – tremendous power, great fuel economy and all-new capabilities to make their F-150 even more productive.”

Delivering 430 horsepower and 570 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque ever for F-150 – the 4×2 PowerBoost truck is rated at a maximum 12,700 pounds of conventional towing with Max Trailer Tow Package and a maximum payload of 2,120 poundsƗ.

Pro Power Onboard is standard on PowerBoost-equipped F-150 with 2.4 kilowatts of exportable power on tap at outlets in the cabin and cargo box. The optional 7.2-kilowatt output provides up to 18 times more exportable power than the nearest competitor – enough to power everything from a tailgate event to a construction site.

The all-new F-150 features decades of innovation – from its high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy body atop a high-strength steel frame, to revolutionary EcoBoost® technology. F-150 is the only light-duty full-size pickup that comes standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission across all engine offerings.

With six engine options, F-150 offers customers the choice to create their own optimal balance of power, capability, fuel economy and affordability. Ford Bronco Finishes Baja

The Bronco R Race Prototype, piloted by Cameron Steele, Shelby Hall and a team of veteran Ford off-road racers, finished the 53rd SCORE-International Baja 1000 in Class 2 in just over 32 hours. The race adds to Bronco’s storied history at Baja dating back to 1967.

Sharing in the effort were co-drivers Johnny Campbell, Curt LeDuc and Jason Scherer.

“When Bronco returned we said it would follow in the legacy of the first-generation Broncos that forever changed the off-road landscape – and today’s finish demonstrates we’re continuing the ‘Built Wild’ pedigree of Bronco,” said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance motorsports.

Powered by a fully stock Ford 2.7-liter EcoBoost engine and Ford 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, the Bronco R Race Prototype serves as a testbed for Bronco Built Wild Extreme Testing durability regimen and for the final the Baja Mode calibrations for the Terrain Management System™ with G.O.A.T. Modes on the production versions.

A pre-production 2021 Bronco two-door Outer Banks™ series with Sasquatch™ off-road Package also made its first appearance in the Baja Mexico desert.

The successful finish underscores Bronco brand’s performance legacy at Baja, which includes the first-ever overall production 4×4 class win in 1969 Baja 1000 – a feat no other manufacturer has accomplished since.

Overall, the first-generation Broncos claimed five Baja 1000 class wins (1967, ’69, ’69, ’71 and ’72) and two overall Baja 500 victories in 1970 and 1973. Later model year Broncos (1978-95) continued the legendary winning streak with nine Baja 500 Class 3 wins from 2004 to 2015 and 15 Baja 1000 Class 3 wins between 2002 to 2019.

Ford is the Official Truck and SUV of SCORE-International Off-Road Racing and lead sponsor of the SCORE World Desert Challenge Series, which includes the 2019-22 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Ford is also official vehicle of the Ultra4 King of the Hammers competition. Together, they underscore Ford’s commitment to off-road motorsports and serve as a platform to develop the Bronco brand and connect with off-road enthusiasts.

2021 Ford F-150 Torture Testing
  • The 3.5-liter PowerBoost™ in the 2021 Ford F-150 is the only full hybrid powertrain available in a pickup and the only one Built Ford Tough; generating 430 horsepower and 570 lb.-ft. of torque, it can tow up to 12,700 pounds
  • The PowerBoost hybrid is tested to the extreme standards the rest of the F-150 powertrain lineup endures; engineers punished the all-new F-150 PowerBoost in grueling real-world proving grounds and laboratory conditions
  • A special laboratory test rig was specifically built to abuse the 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery used in the PowerBoost system, simulating 10 years of pummeling in just 82 hours

The all-new 3.5-liter PowerBoost™ full hybrid powertrain is available in the all-new F-150 and is the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a pickup. PowerBoost was created by the Ford team to deliver years of dependable, hardworking service with 430 horsepower 570 lb.-ft of torque – the most torque ever in an F-150.“Just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t mean we treated PowerBoost with kid gloves,” said Craig Schmatz, F-150 chief engineer. “To earn Built Ford Tough certification, PowerBoost went through the torture testing we put all of our powertrains through. No F-150 powertrain gets a pass, we have one standard for quality and durability.”

The full hybrid powertrain is the most powerful engine in the all-new F-150 lineup, delivering 430 horsepower and 570 lb.-ft. of torque. To prove it will deliver the long-term performance customers demand, it also had to pass the same tests all other F-150s must complete. Tests included towing fully loaded trailers over desert mountain passes in 100-plus degree temperatures, withstanding punishing terrain off-road, conquering frozen tundras, and enduring high-humidity chambers, salt baths and roads designed to destroy.

Engineers added a unique durability test specifically for PowerBoost. Ford built a custom testing machine using multi-axis hydraulic actuation to violently shake the powertrain’s 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery – simulating conditions like hitting the harshest of potholes and washboard roads, then subjecting it to even more daily abuse. Putting the battery through just 82 hours on this machine is the equivalent of 10 years of mechanical torture. “This thing is like a mechanical bull on steroids,” said Jack Parnoutsoukian, high-voltage application engineer.

In combination with the modular hybrid transmission, the battery enables the operation of Pro Power Onboard to deliver a standard 2.4 kilowatts of exportable power or available 7.2 kilowatts – 18 times more power than what the nearest competitor can manage.

That was in addition to the battery of Built Ford Tough testing that spans America.

For instance, Davis Dam in the Mojave Desert of Arizona is a massive 11.4-mile slope that climbs 3,500 feet with an average 6 percent grade and harsh heat. It is one of the toughest places in the United States to test towing performance. PowerBoost trucks loaded to the maximum available tow rating of 12,700 pounds climbed and descended the Davis Dam pass over and over and over again to prove the full durability of the engine, modular hybrid transmission, cooling systems and towing technologies.

At the Ford Michigan proving grounds, PowerBoost was tested on road surfaces too punishing for test drivers. Robots repeatedly drove PowerBoost over a continuous series of man-made potholed and grooved roads at the unique Silver Creek test course. Silver Creek includes a dozen distinct types of metal-edged chuckholes repeated for almost a quarter mile. Fully loaded to the maximum available payload of 2,120 pounds, PowerBoost successfully ran the course hundreds of times. It also proved itself against the extreme inclines of the proving grounds, on high-speed ovals, and in water intrusion events.

Part of pushing F-150 to the extreme means putting it through punishing off-road adventures, so engineers traveled to the unrelenting terrain of the Anza-Borrego Desert in Southern California. By subjecting PowerBoost-equipped trucks to mountainous sand dunes, slippery and jagged rocks, high-speed trails and mud walls, engineers ensured the hybrid system can deliver the power and capability F-150 owners need for work or recreation.

The all-new 2021 Ford F-150 goes on sale this fall. It is proudly built and assembled in America at Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Michigan, and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Missouri.

  • Ford’s Project Apollo and Ford Fund will deliver 10 million masks to national and local nonprofits, schools, veterans and other at-risk communities facing shortages of personal protective equipment
  • Project Apollo is ramping up production of masks through the end of this year to meet company and additional community needs
  • Latest donation is on top of the more than 75 million pieces of personal protective equipment Project Apollo has manufactured to protect healthcare workers, first responders, and patients fighting COVID-19

Ford’s Project Apollo, in cooperation with Ford Motor Company Fund, is launching a community donation program that will initially deliver 10 million masks to at-risk communities across the U.S. with limited access to personal protective equipment.

Project Apollo – Ford’s codename for its efforts to produce personal protective equipment, including respirators, face shields, medical gowns, plus ventilators for COVID-19 patients – has improved its ability to build medical-grade masks and is now manufacturing more than the company needs to keep its employees safe.

Ford Motor Company Fund, the company’s philanthropic arm, is engaging its substantial network of nonprofit partners, state and local officials, schools and community groups to mobilize and distribute 10 million masks to help fill the essential needs of hospitals, businesses, and communities across the United States.

“Protecting the health of students, families, workers and others at risk in our communities is the top priority as we continue to fight back against this unprecedented pandemic,” said Mary Culler, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “We are proud to add these masks to our ongoing community support, knowing we are at our best when we all come together to help.”

Masks are being sent to select cities and states with Ford plant locations, as well as other organizations around the country. Recipients for the 10 million masks have been identified and distribution has already started. Additional donations will be made as mask production increases through the end of the year. Decisions on those recipients will be made later. Ford plans to leverage its dealer network where possible once manufacturing ramps up.

Among the first groups to receive masks are:

  • African American community – The lack of personal protective equipment remains an obstacle to the safe reopening of small businesses in many African American communities. Ford Fund and the National Urban League will provide masks to businesses in cities hard hit by COVID-19, including Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New Orleans and New York.
  • DAV – Disabled American Veterans require access to personal protective equipment so they can continue to transport veterans to VA hospitals for medical care. Ford has a 98-year relationship with DAV, longer than any other company in the U.S.
  • Food insecure – Food banks and organizations providing food to individuals and families will receive masks to keep volunteers and clients safe
  • American Red Cross – Masks are needed for protection during blood donations.
  • Schools – With the ongoing debate over how to proceed with opening schools, it’s clear the need for personal protective equipment will increase, especially in underserved communities where students will be going back to the classroom. The national network of Ford Next Generation Learning will target resources to schools in plant communities needing masks. Students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities will also be included.
  • Southeast Michigan – Demand remains high for personal protective equipment among many community organizations in southeast Michigan, Ford’s home base. Ford Resource and Engagement Centers in Detroit will be utilized as distribution sites for area neighborhoods.
  • State of Michigan – Ford is providing 1.5 million masks to the state for distribution to COVID-19 testing sites, health centers, homeless shelters and more.

“From providing disabled veterans free rides to VA medical appointments to free claims assistance and other much-needed services in the community, DAV has continued making all of our no-cost services available to disabled veterans and their families since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said John Kleindienst, DAV national voluntary services director. “We simply could not continue these operations without our many selfless volunteers and dedicated employees. Ford’s donation of these masks demonstrates its unwavering commitment to America’s disabled veterans and ensures DAV can continue its mission of supporting them through this pandemic as safely as possible.”

Ford, in partnership with United Auto Workers, has produced more than 75 million pieces of personal protective equipment to meet the enormous demand. Altogether, this amounts to:

  • More than 19 million face shields and 42 million face masks
  • 50,000 patient ventilators (by the end of August)
  • More than 32,000 powered air-purifying respirators in collaboration with 3M
  • 1.6 million washable isolation gowns

Ford’s workforce was able to quickly shift gears to produce urgently needed medical supplies in part because of its strong U.S. manufacturing footprint. Ford employs more hourly workers in the U.S. than any other automaker and assembles more vehicles in the U.S. than any other automaker.

Ford Fund has contributed nearly $3 million to nonprofits helping people manage challenges related to the pandemic, including more than $1.1 million delivered by employees and others through the COVID-19 match program. To learn more about Ford Fund’s response to hunger,
